Maplewood Students Support Community Through Library Book Sale Charity Event
Date of Event: April 26, 2025
Location: Maplewood Academy Library, 8 Fairlawn Avenue, Toronto, ON
Giving Back Through Books
On April 26, 2025, the Maplewood Academy Library came alive with energy, generosity, and community spirit during the annual Book Sale Charity Volunteer Event. Organized by the Library Committee in partnership with the Student Council, the event brought students, staff, and families together for a meaningful cause: promoting literacy while supporting local charitable initiatives.
The event featured a wide selection of gently used books donated by the school community—including novels, non-fiction, academic texts, and children’s literature—all available at affordable prices. All proceeds from the sale were donated to Toronto’s Children’s Book Bank, an organization that provides free books and literacy support to underserved communities across the city.
Student Leadership in Action
Over 30 student volunteers participated in organizing and running the event, assisting with book sorting, sales, promotions, and customer support throughout the day. Their leadership, teamwork, and enthusiasm were instrumental in making the event a success.
“It was amazing to see students come together, not just to raise funds, but to share the love of reading,” said Ms. Turner, Maplewood’s Head Librarian. “The impact goes beyond our school—it reaches families and children who may not have access to books at home.”
Special Moment: Community Picks and Hidden Gems
One highlight of the event was the “Hidden Gems” table, where volunteers curated underrated or lesser-known books with hand-written student reviews. Shoppers were encouraged to take a chance on something new—and many did! A pop-up reading corner with tea and cookies made the event feel warm and welcoming for all who attended.
