Contests & Competitions
At Maplewood Academy, we are committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience that goes beyond the classroom. Our “Contests & Competitions” program offers students the opportunity to explore their passions, sharpen their skills, and achieve excellence in a variety of disciplines. Whether it’s math, science, technology, arts, or public speaking, these events inspire creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork. By participating in prestigious local, national, and international competitions, our students gain valuable experiences, build confidence, and prepare for future success. Mathematics
AMC 10
The AMC 10 tests mathematical problem solving with arithmetic, algebra, counting, geometry, number theory, and probability and other secondary school math topics. Problems are designed to be solved by students without any background in calculus or trigonometry.
AMC 12
The AMC 12 tests mathematical problem solving with arithmetic, algebra, counting, geometry, number theory, and probability and other secondary school math topics. Problems are designed to be solvable by students without any background in calculus.
Euclid Contest
The Euclid Contest, organized annually by the University of Waterloo’s CEMC, is a prestigious mathematics competition for high school students with strong problem-solving skills. It challenges participants with advanced mathematical problems, offering them a chance to showcase their abilities and prepare for university-level studies.
Biology
Canadian Biology Olympiad
The Canadian Biology Olympiad (CBO) is a national competition that identifies and nurtures talented high school students passionate about biology. It challenges participants with rigorous problems in various biological fields, preparing them for international competitions and fostering scientific excellence.
National Biology Competition
The competition was created to provide high school students with an opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding of biology, and high school teachers with a vehicle to help them promote biology and share their excitement and interest in biology with their students. It was hoped that the competition would enhance the recruitment of outstanding biology students to the University of Toronto, and increase the awareness among high school students and teachers of the excellence in and commitment to biological education at U of T. Beginning in 2003, the competition served as the qualifying exam for the Canadian Biology Olympiad Training Camp, with the top olympiad participants advancing to the International Biology Olympiad.
Brain Bee
The Brain Bee is a competition for high school students, grades 9 through 12. Students are tested on the knowledge about the brain and neuroscience research. It is designed to stimulate interest and excitement about brain research. Students study topics on memory, sleep, intelligence, emotion, perception, stress, aging, brain imaging, neurology, neurotransmitters, genetics, brain disease, and more.
Chemistry
Canadian Chemistry Contest
The Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) is carried out in conjunction with the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO). The CCC fosters an appreciation of chemistry as a career for talented young people and promotes national excellence in chemistry at the high school/Cégep level. Over 600 students write this exam annually, in conjunction with the CCO exam.
Economics
Canadian Economics Olympiad
The Canadian Economics Olympiad (CEO) is a national competition that challenges high school students to apply economic theory, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities to real-world scenarios. It serves as Canada’s qualifier for the International Economics Olympiad, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their knowledge, compete at an advanced level, and gain valuable insights into economics and finance.
